The novel Black Wind (黑風) is the first work by Han Yongun (1879~1944). The theme of this novel has been understood as the spirit of social reform or revolution by the lower classes resisting the exploitation of capitalists and landlords. It has also been evaluated as a work aimed at inspiring patriotism and the spirit of anti-Japanese independence. But in this study, the work was re-examined through the modern womanhood. The modern womanhood as envisioned by Manhae was neither that of a virtuous and filial woman, nor a radical advocate for women's liberation, nor a modern woman striving to be a wise mother and good wife. The modern womanhood emphasized in this novel is that of individuals who are aware of their own identity, are not subjugated to men or the household, and autonomously and independently pursue their own will. Han Yongun demonstrated through this novel that such self-awareness is equivalent to the liberation of both the individual and humanity as a whole. Black Wind is a novel that responds to the demands of the modern era and reflects the existential consciousness of human liberation, portraying an ideal image of women.
