Among the various Avalokitesvara, the painting depicting the beautiful Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara sitting in a half lotus position with the moon reflected in the water and bamboo in the background is called 'Water Moon Avalokiteśvara Boddhisattva'. The screen composition of Water Moon Avalokiteśvara Boddhisattva is centered on the main statue, and only waterside and rocks are depicted at the bottom of the picture, or icons obtained from Buddhist scriptures related to seonjaedongja or various relief from disasters, ordinary people, dragon kings and mountain gods, and Buddhist monk Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty. This has been expressed The iconography obtained from Xuanzang's Buddhist scriptures described at the bottom of Water Moon Avalokiteśvara Boddhisattva appearing from the Song Dynasty is not based on Buddhist scriptures. This study contains the process of completing the story of Xuanzang as a novel A Journey to the West through the Song Yuan Ming period. The novel A Journey to the West was compiled in the Ming Dynasty, but based on the records of Xuanzang's Da tang xiyu ji, which had been handed down for nearly 900 years, Datang sanzangqujingshihua and the Yuan Dynasty's miscellaneous drama A Journey to the West were handed down. In this study, Datang sanzangqujingshihua and A Journey to the West in the Yuan Dynasty were the basis for Xuanzang's journey to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures and the basis for the story of Sun Wukong, Shao Zheng, and Bajie.In addition, the establishment of the iconography obtained from the Buddhist scriptures was made in the early Northern Song Dynasty, and the earliest example depicted with Water Moon Avalokiteśvara Boddhisattva could be confirmed in the lower part of the Water Moon Avalokitesvara sculpture in the second cave of the Zhong Shan Grotto, which was made in 1112. Through this it is considered that there is a place to reconsider the existing view that the combination of the existing Water Moon Avalokiteśvara Boddhisattva and Xuanzang story is Guazhou area.In addition, it was speculated that the background of the depiction of Xuanzang icon in Water Moon Avalokiteśvara Boddhisattva might be the story of Potalakasan and Xiangshan related to Avalokitesvara among the places visited by Xuanzang described in Da tang xiyu ji and Datang sanzangqujingshihua.
