This paper demonstrates that the discourse on moral reform by conformist clergy in the late 17th century was closely related to their providential worldview. Since the Reformation, the Anglican Church had maintained a historical perspective that God's providence exerted a dominant force over the general flow of church history, believing that the disasters and sufferings throughout history suggested the possibility of salvation through divine punishment and further reform. Therefore, the Anglican clergy recognized divine punishment as an opportunity for her to correct moral decay and religious renewal, placing this at the centre of discussions to inspire the moral renewal of actual believers. After the Restoration, the Church of England continuously propagated an apocalyptic sense of crisis that divine punishment could befall the English people, emphasizing that both individual repentance and national-level penitence were means to avoid divine retribution. This paper meticulously examines the nature of repentance advocated by Anglican clergy in the late 17th century and the logical process by which discussions on moral reform unfolded, based on the premise that the providential perspective of the Anglican Church was accepted as the main framework for diagnosing the spiritual situation of contemporary England.
