The growing interest in public health has has led to notable transition in the health policies and health promotion paradigms in Korea. There is a clear shift from a focus on disease treatment to disease prevention and health promotion. This shift has increased a demand for professionals skilled in promoting healthy living practices and educating the public on managing health risk factors. The health education certification system has been operational as a national certification system since the revision of the National Health Promotion Act in 2009. Both national and local governments actively encourage the employment of health educators within organizations or entities related to health promotion projects. Furthermore, they are active in various fields. However, there is recognized need for ongoing post-certification quality management because of the absence of mandatory continuing education for health educators. To address this, the Korea Health Promotion Institute has been conducting competency-enhancing practical skill workshops for health educators. In 2023, they developed a mid-to-long-term plan to strengthen the expertise of health educators and created online training content. Looking ahead, they plan to enhance the capabilities of health educators through additional content development, expanded access to education, and continuous operation.
