Lee, HyunKeun. “English Adv + Ved type Compounds and their Korean Correspondences.” Modern Studies in English Language & Literature 68.1 (2024): 237-58. The purpose of this paper is to study the conceptualization aspects of each language by identifying the morphological and semantic structures of Adv + Ved type English compounds and their Korean counterparts. Adv + Ved type English compounds such as ‘a new-born baby’ and ‘frequently asked questions’ consist of two components; the first part is an adverb and the second one is the verb with the past participle –ed. The following conclusions have been reached. First, on the morphological characteristics, these compounds can be divided into flat adverbs and adverbs containing –ly. The flat adverb compound usually uses hyphens, while the latter does not. Sometimes these compounds can be graded with comparative and superlative forms. Second, on the semantic characteristics, the compound’s meaning is transparent because it can be inferred from existing words. The passive meaning tends to be weakened. And its lexical meaning has expanded from concrete to abstract. Third, when the meaning of the English compound is compared to its Korean counterpart, the conceptualization difference between the two was not significant in onomasiological viewpoint.
