Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship among evaluative concerns perfectionism, psychological need frustration, and competition anxiety in professional football players.
Method: The subjects of this study were 283 football players. Participants completed a series of questionnaires on evaluative concerns of perfectionism, psychological need frustration, and competition anxiety. Multiple regression analyses were conducted using SPSS 23.0 to analyze the collected data, and the results are presented below.
Results: First, the doubt about performance has a positive (+) influence on the frustration of the need for autonomy. Additionally, doubts about performance and socially prescribed perfectionism have a positive (+) influence on the frustration of the need for relatedness and competence. However, the concern over mistakes has a negative (-) influence on the frustration of the need for relatedness and competence. Second, the concern over mistakes and socially prescribed perfectionism have a positive (+) influence on competition anxiety. Third, the frustration of the need for autonomy and competence has a positive (+) influence on competition anxiety. Fourth, psychological need frustration was found to partially mediate the relationship between evaluative concerns perfectionism and competition anxiety.
Conclusion: These results indicate that psychological need frustration and competition anxiety depend on the evaluative concerns perfectionism of professional football players. Additionally, competition anxiety is influenced by psychological need frustration. Moreover, evaluative concerns perfectionism had an indirect effect on competition anxiety through psychological need frustration, acting as a partial mediating factor.
