Evaluative morphology refers to the expression of evaluation through morphological means, relating to the category of subjectivity expressed by language beyond propositions. Scalise(1984) discovered forms in Italian that do not create new words or carry grammatical meaning but only enhance expressiveness or convey additional subjective meanings. He named these forms “evaluative morphology”. Since these cannot be explained by traditional derivation and inflection, they are called the “third morphology”, and extensive research has been conducted on them, particularly in Indo-European languages.
Korean, as an agglutinative language, has well-developed suffixes. Evaluative morphology in Korean is realized through bleached derivative suffixes and reduplication.
Noun evaluative morphology conveys negative meanings through the increase of material(members). Verb evaluative morphology conveys negative meanings through the increase of action (intensity, multiplicity). Adjective evaluative morphology conveys negative meanings through the increase of quality(attributes), and adverb evaluative morphology indicates the reduction or increase of situations(time, manner).
Chinese, being an isolating language without morphological changes, realizes evaluative morphology primarily through dialectal suffixes, reduplication, and reduplication+suffix.
Noun evaluative morphology conveys positive meanings through the reduction of material(size). Verb evaluative morphology conveys negative meanings through the increase of action(intensity, multiplicity). Adjective evaluative morphology conveys positive or negative meanings through the increase of quality(attributes), and adverb evaluative morphology indicates the reduction or increase of situations(time, manner).
