This study examines reduplication in sign languages. In spoken languages, reduplication comes in various phonological forms from copy of a single segment to a syllable, foot or prosodic word. The process not only derives new lexical items or changes word classes but also performs certain grammatical functions such as number and aspect. It further conveys various meanings of intensity and frequency. Comparing the forms and functions of reduplication in spoken languages with those in sign languages, we demonstrate that reduplication in sign languages also has both derivational and inflectional functions and denotes intensity and frequency as in spoken languages despite differences in modality. We further demonstrate that grammatical functions are performed in various forms and movements, suggesting the shape of reduplication in sign languages can be distinguished by repetition of movement types, such as arc or path vs. short, or backward vs. non-backward. This study lends support to the views that sign languages have the descriptive characteristics of languages like spoken languages, which further provides new insights, particularly the possibility of hierarchical structure in sign languages in terms of reduplication.
