This study examines the Korean passive constructions in dissertation abstracts written by Chinese and Korean students, with the aim of understanding advanced learners’ proficiency in both the form and function of passives in academic texts. For this purpose, a small corpus of 200 dissertation abstracts from the fields of linguistics and Korean education was compiled. Analyses were conducted focusing on morphological, syntactic, and lexical passives, resulting in the following observations. First, Chinese students produced fewer passives than Korean students, with the most significant difference observed in the use of lexical passives. Second, Chinese students did not achieve the same level of proficiency as the native speakers in using the passive’s hedging function, which may have contributed to texts with a more direct and assertive style. The Chinese students’ insufficient competence with Sino-Korean lexical items and the transfer of L1 passive features are considered as possible causes for these usage patterns.
