The metaverse-related industry is rapidly expanding, and relevant academic research has increased accordingly. This study aimed to compare perceptions of metaverse by academia and the general public through big data and visualized materials. “Metaverse” was used as the search keyword for both groups to compare academia and the public’s perception of the metaverse. Korea Citation Index (KCI) database was used to identify the perception of academia, and data was gathered from web portals, Naver and Daum, to investigate the public’s perception. The time frame for data collection for both groups was one year, from January 1 to December 31, 2021. This study used Textom and UCINET6 programs for analysis, and executed keyword frequency analysis, word cloud, degree centrality, and network analysis. The terms that frequently appeared in academia’s perception of the metaverse were in the order “Metaverse, research, brand, experience, human, and fine art centered.” Meanwhile, the most frequently appearing words in the general public’s perception of the metaverse were “metaverse, platform, game, and virtual.” The results of the comparative analysis of the two groups showed that academia is interested in scholarly activities, such as research and education, and focuses on the effect and development of the metaverse. At the same time, the general public is curious about virtual reality, future technology, various content, and platforms. The public participates in activities using the metaverse and notices related industries. This study identified the metaverse perception and its trend among academics and the public, performed a comparative analysis, and they will mutually contribute to the development of both sides.
