Tanzan Ishibashi showed his understanding of the independence movements in Korea, including the March First Independence Movement. In addition, he was the first Japanese to read John Maynard Keynes"s General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money, and advocated the idea of “Little Japanism” establishing a nation with peaceful processing trade to counter imperialism, abandoning Taiwan, Korea, and Manchuria. He published his opinions in Toyo Keizai Shinpo magazine editorial.
After the war, he joined the first Yoshida Cabinet as Minister of Finance. He advocated the abolition of Yasukuni Shrine. After the Liberal Democratic Party presidential election held in December 1956, Ishibashi became prime minister. Ishibashi advocated a peace alliance between the United States, the Soviet Union, and China, emphasizing the significance of the pacifist constitution, and calling for the realization of a “world federation” that would protect peace through an international police force rather than the armaments of each country. However, on January 25, 1957, he fell ill. In 1960 his successor Nobusuke Kishi revised the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty and strengthened the Japan-US alliance despite Ishibashi’s protest. In order to have a common understanding of history, achieve reconciliation, and pursue common security like in Europe, it is necessary to change the course of increasing military power and strengthening the Japan-US alliance, ba sed on arguments of Ishibashi.
