While closed school facilities may have lost their original educational purpose, they still hold significant symbolic value from both geographical and emotional perspectives tied to their existence as former educational institutions. This is linked to the concept of placemaking, which revolves around creating environments that embrace the values and culture of a community through a people-centered approach. Consequently, by using a case study of regenerated closed school spaces, this study seeks to put forward effective strategies, through the lens of placemaking planning. To do this, an evaluation framework was employed to extract and analyze key factors in regenerated spaces that repurpose closed school facilities, with a focus on such spaces within metropolitan cities. The research results are as follows : First, “Enhancing Publicness, Fostering a Sense of Togetherness, Preservation and Utilization of Resources, Convenience of Movement and Access, and Creating a Distinctive Image” emerged as pivotal elements within the realm of placemaking planning. Second, in the context of Preservation and Utilization of Resources, there is a need to reflect the symbolic elements of existing school facilities within the space. Third, regarding Convenience of Movement and Access, there is a need to improve the space and surrounding environment by taking into account differences according to the characteristics of location types. Fourth, in terms of Creating a Distinctive Image, a distinctive and well-represented design holds the potential to symbolically convey the essence of the space at a mere glance. This study focused on regeneration spaces transformed from pre-existing school facilities. Future research endeavors may involve comparing results to discern variations in the application of placemaking planning elements based on construction methods, usage, and location types.
