Recently, there has been a growing trend of spectator-participatory artworks in contemporary art exhibitions. This tendency has established itself as a significant expressive element within modern artworks. And artists encourages active participation from the spectator through elements such as the title, pathways, viewing pattern, and installation. This study aims to analyze the tendency of actively inducing spectator participation in contemporary artworks through affordance and to explore the communicative approach between behavior-inducing artworks and spectators. Affordances are based on the study of the connectivity of actions that occur in the relationship between the actor and the surrounding environment. They are referred to as ‘behavioral induction’ and ‘behavioral support.’ Under the theory that affordance situations can lead to specific actions by the actor, this study applies this concept to the viewing and interpretative perspective of contemporary artworks. For the case study, Maya Lin’s “Vietnam Veterans Memorial,” U Sunok’s “Warm Wall,” and Roman Ondak’s “Measuring the Universe” are analyzed from an affordance perspective, exploring the relationship between contemporary artworks and affordance, as well as the impact of affordance on artworks and changes in viewing behavior. Behavioral induction is not just a way to improve the quality of viewing. It has come to define the form and content of artworks, turning the viewer from a mere observer into an actor and creator of the artwork. The affordance of artworks reveal elements that spectators may not have perceived in their everyday experiences, expanding their cognitive processes and encouraging them to utilize diverse senses, thereby leading to varied approaches in art appreciation. And by extending the viewing time, the spectator can think about the artwork more deeply and linger in front of the artwork for a longer duration. In contemporary art, affordance research has not been actively conducted because it is perceived as an incidental and instrumental element of the artwork, there is an anticipation that this study could expand its horizons.
