The cover images of Korean popular magazines published in the early 20th century embody the inherent meaning of enlightening subjects who play a role in acquiring the perception of the changed consumer society of modern times and establishing a modern visuality. In particular, the concept of hobbies that emerged in modern times naturalizes modern value and consumption and encompasses ideology through magazine cover images, which are culturally produced products. This study analyzes the mythological meaning inherent in the hobby of modern times, focusing on the case of illustrations on the cover of Byeolgeongon, a hobby magazine that started publication in 1926. The visual aspects of hobbies that emerged are as follows: First, they showed images of modern women who were progressive and modern, concerning their hobbies, for example, women enjoying leisure through attractions and tourism, enjoying consumption and hobbies and modern girls enjoying contemplation and romance. However, women appeared as dual aspects, e.g. Westernized figures who were independent and enjoyed their personal tastes in the field of hobbies, and as the others who became the objects of interest and entertainment. Second, animals were mythicized as exotic spectacles and objects of hobbies, as well as enlightening subjects. Animals were symbolized as the subjects of modern enlightenment or objectified as objects for viewing, such as exotic and stuffed pictures. Third, nature was restructured as a modern consumption space for tourism, vacation, and sightseeing, rather than something related to livelihood or scenery. Fourth, leisure activities such as sports, entertainment, and amusement were reproduced as ideal subjects for modern consumption culture and bourgeois hobbies. Through this, it can be understood that the Byeolgeongon cover illustrations of modern times are symbolized as mythicized subjects that acquire the modernity of hobbies with women, animals, nature, and leisure activities as the center and embodies inherent meanings.
