In a situation where a typical basic system, which was composed of symbol marks and logotypes, is changed to a text-based logo, a formal study of it has become more important. The purpose of this study is to suggest a new perspective of ‘symbol-excluded logo’ instead of the existing word mark concept, and to examine the visual emphasis means contained in it and the types of idiomatic expressions appearing in the method. As a research method, from January 2018 to the present, we analyzed thousands of ‘symbol-excluded logo’ data obtained through Google searches or direct investigations in Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand. As a result, the visual emphasis means of the ‘symbol-excluded logo’ were divided into three, and 17 detailed means of use, including seven typography means, five letter transformation means, and five additional formative means, were derived. Then, by applying the derived 17 methods to the ‘symbol-excluded logo’, which is the object of analysis, it was summarized that there are a total of 75 idiomatic expressions in the method of visually emphasizing the logo. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that 75 idiomatic methods had three expression goals: first, giving a unique sense of unity to the logo; second, visually emphasizing the logo with a change of one letter; third, creating diversity through hybridization. The conclusion of the study is that the visual emphasis method of the ‘symbol-excluded logo’ is composed of 17 means to pursue these three goals and 75 types of idiomatic methods that apply the means. This study will be able to serve as a methodological guide that can be applied in design practice by identifying 75 types of idiomatic methods that exist today as visual emphasis methods for ‘symbol-excluded logo’. In addition, it is judged that it will be helpful in understanding the format of the ‘symbol-excluded logo’ and learning the formative principles contained in it in the educational field.
