Although there have been significant advancements in achievement-related research, little research has been dedicated to investigating the differences in mindset between individuals who derive happiness from their own accomplishments and those who revel in others’ failures. This study seeks to bridge this research gap by exploring the interplay between mindset and achievement comparison. Participants were presented with two scenarios: [Situation 1] They perform very well, but others outperform them (e.g., “I received an A grade, but my peers got an A+”); [Situation 2] Their performance is mediocre, but others fare even worse (e.g., “I received a C grade, but my peers got a D”). The study measured subjective happiness and mindset. Findings revealed that the fixed mindset group, which derives satisfaction from favorable comparisons with others, exhibited a marked increase in happiness in Situation 2 over Situation 1. In contrast, the growth mindset group, which values personal objective achievements, reported heightened happiness in Situation 1 compared to Situation 2. This study not only advances the existing body of knowledge by elucidating the nexus between mindset and happiness but also furnishes empirical evidence underscoring the potential of growth mindset interventions to positively influence happiness levels. Building upon these research findings, it is hoped that future studies will employ samples encompassing a diverse range of demographic data to foster a more profound understanding of the interrelations among mindset, achievement comparison, and happiness.
