The nationalist trend that arose in Russia in the 19th century led to interest in Russian folk culture, especially bylina. Bylina of Novgorod Sadko was at the center of such attention. There are many works of art from the 19th century with the theme of bylina Sadko, but among them, Rimsky-Korsakov"s opera Sadko has caused much controversy. This controversy is related to Stasov"s views on bylina and Sadko. Stasov discovered folklorism and ancient paganism in bylina Sadko, while at the same time trying to find its eastern origins. Stasov"s theory drew the ire of contemporary slavists and nationalists, and evaluations of the opera Sadko, which got its ideas from Stasov, were also mixed.
As a result of analyzing various texts borrowed from the opera Sadko, we found that Rimsky-Korsakov not only did not accept Stasov"s opinion, but also did not directly reflect the literary composition and value system of the traditional texts. In his opera Sadko, Rimsky-Korsakov not only transformed the traditional texts, but also reinterpreted it and created a new and contemporary musical work of the 19th century.
