Advances in computer-mediated communication have democratized mobile instant messaging, and the lack of non-verbal cues in online-based communication has led to an increase in the use of emoticons, which can be used as a substitute for facial expressions and body gestures in face-to-face communication. However, emoticons can be interpreted differently by different individuals, and ambiguity in messages can be misleading if it is inconsistent with textual utility. Therefore, this study explored the perceived emotion and message ambiguity of emoticon use through an experiment with a 2 (positive/negative text message) x 2 (positive/negative emoticon) design. The results show that when the utility of text and emoticon are matched, people felt more positive/negative about the message they were exposed to, and were less ambiguous about the message, indicating a greater understanding of the message.
