Unlike ancient China or Japan, Silla has few surviving regulations related to holidays and vacations for officials. To address this, fragmented historical and inscriptive data were maximally combined and utilized. Additionally, by referencing the practices of the preceding Goryeo period, an attempt was made to systematize Silla’s holidays and vacations. For this purpose, I first examined the overall operational patterns of holidays and vacations during the Goryeo era, using this as the basis for discussion.
Goryeo’s holidays and vacations were systematically operated through the law, as shown in the Criminal Code Section(刑法志) of Goryosa(高麗史). Holidays can be classified into regular holidays, seasonal holidays, event holidays, etc., and vacations can be classified into bereavement leaves, sick leaves, ones for ancestral rites, for filial duty, etc. Goryeo’s holidays and vacations were heavily influenced by the Chinese law, but Goryeo’s unique characteristics are confirmed, such as the interval between regular holidays and the existence of unique holidays.
Upon examining Silla’s historical records and inscriptions, it becomes evident that not only the existence of holidays and vacations but also their associated regulations, procedures, and limitations were systemically operated. Silla’s regular holidays are believed to have been akin to the later one seen in the Goryeo period, and it is presumed that other holidays were also designated. Regarding vacations, we can also speculate on their presence, including cases such as sick leaves, as well as the existence of bereavement leaves and annual leaves. This system of holidays and vacations in Silla is thought to demonstrate continuity leading into the Goryeo period.
