‘Chi(赤)/Hong(红)’ and ‘붉다/빨갛다’ constitute the most basic colored color words in the languages of Chinese and Korean. Firstly, in terms of etymology, ‘Chi(赤)’ comes from the color of fire, ‘Hong(红)’ is related to silk fabrics, and ‘붉다’ also comes from fire.
Next, based on the relevant characters and vocabulary included in the Modern Chinese Dictionary (7th edition) and the Standard Korean Dictionary, an exhaustive search and a comprehensive word-formation analysis was conducted on the ‘Chi(赤)/Hong(红)’ series and the ‘붉다/빨갛다’ series.
Finally, with the help of cognitive metaphor and cognitive metonymy, an exhaustive search and classification analysis were conducted on the relevant semantics included in the two dictionaries. There are a total of 16 types of metaphorical semantics, including 10 common semantics, 2 partial common semantics, and 4 individual semantics. There are a total of 17 types of metonymic semantics, including 8 common semantics, 4 partial common semantics, and 5 individual semantics.
