The purpose of this paper is to examine the question of whether reading cognate words in an L2 can be modulated by reading tasks and other cross-linguistic factors. To this end, the study compared response times in a lexical decision and a sentence reading task, considering the factors of L1/L2 frequency, and phonological similarity between two languages. The experiments yielded the findings that reading times were significantly modulated by the task at hands, revealing much reduced cross-linguistic activation in sentence reading relative to lexical decision. The results also reported that the frequency of words in both languages and phonological similarity determined reading times of cognate words in a lexical decision task, supporting the language non-selective view of lexical access. The study proves evidence that cross-linguistic factors are more influential in isolated word reading compared to natural sentence reading, suggesting sentence context effects on cross-linguistic lexical activation with different-script languages.
