Purpose: This study aims to clarify the scope of outpatient nurses’ doctor’s office support through an in-depth analysis of their office support experience and provide basic data for developing strategies toward an advanced work environment. Methods: Data were collected through focus group interviews with 12 nurses in the outpatient clinics of a tertiary hospital between October 12 and 14, 2022. The results were analyzed using content analysis. Results: Five topics and 15 subtopics emerged from the support experiences of outpatient nurses. The five topics were ‘Starting support the doctor’s office with counter-questions and skepticism’, ‘Prioritizing patient safety and experience despite skepticism about their role’, ‘Bumping against helpless barriers’, ‘Experiencing moments of positive power’, and ‘Embracing office support as a nurse’s role through experience’. Conclusion: Outpatient nurses initially perceived doctor’s office support as a simple task that any employee could perform, but with experience, they accepted that office support requires the knowledge and competence of a nurse. However, they experienced difficulties due to unstipulated tasks, distorted perceptions of office support, and lack of administrative support for outpatient personnel. These highlighted a need for institutional support and enhanced perception of nurses’ outpatient office support tasks. Future research should identify the office support tasks of outpatient nurses.
