Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of different recovery methods in varying temperature environments on the rate of lactic acid removal, heart rate recovery, pulse wave speed, and body temperature of male kendo athletes after performing maximum lower body exercise.
Method: The subjects of the study were recruited from male kendo atheltes from the Korea Sports Council. Maximum oxygen intake was initially measured using the Bruce protocol. In the experiment, participants engaged in maximum lower body exercise at 60% of their individual maximum oxygen intake for 30 minutes. Following the exercise, they underwent dynamic and static recovery in climate-controlled rooms set at low temperature (5.0±0.5°C) and high temperature (33.0±0.5°C), respectively. Data analysis was conducted using the SPSS 25.0 statistical software. Mean and standard deviation were calculated, and a repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine differences between time periods and recovery methods. Post hoc analysis was conducted using Tukey’s test, and the significance levels were set at α= .05.
Results: The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in the rate of lactic acid removal depending on the timing and method of recovery (p<.001, p<.05). Dynamic recovery at low temperatures showed a higher rate of lactic acid removal (p<.05). Second, the heart rate recovery rate showed a significant difference in timing, recovery method, and interaction (p<.001, p<.001, p<.001). Static recovery at high temperature showed the highest heart rate recovery rate (p<.001). Third, there was no significant difference in pulse wave speed depending on the temperature difference and recovery method. Fourth, there were significant differences in timing, recovery method, and interaction in body temperature (p<.001, p<.001, p<.001). Static recovery at high temperatures resulted in the fatsest recovery of body temperature (p<.001).
Conclusion: For kendo athletes, where muscle strength and endurance are vital for performance, it is recommended to engage dynamic recovery at lower temperatures in order to effectively remove of lactic acid.
