This study focuses on the aspects of tonal variation of voiced obstruent onset syllable in the Classical Chinese, and tries to interpret its forming of phonological representation and variational principle with the Non-linear Phonology, specially Autosegmental Phonology, Feature Geometry Theory and Underspecification Theory. This study develops as follow: The paper is divided into four chapters according to the research content. Chapter Ⅰ provides introductory remark about this paper. In chapter Ⅱ, concerning tonal variation of voiced obstruent onset syllable in the Classical Chinese are presented. It also showed a work list through this. Chapter Ⅲ is divided into two sections according to the content again. In section Ⅰ, based on the previous analyses by Mei and Dingbangxin and description of tone form in literature materials, we explained tone value of in Ancient Chinese and Old Mandarin. On the next section, we proposes an alternative analysis of the aspects of tonal variation of voiced obstruent onset syllable in the Classical Chinese. Namely, tonal variation of voiced obstruent onset syllable is a tone spread of voiced obstruent onset to nuclear by universal linking convention, which explain spread from tone character, tone stability, tone mobility etc. The alternative analysis shows a systematic relationship among the tonal variation of voiced obstruent onset syllable in Zhuoshangbianqu(濁上變去) and can easily be re-explained to variation of Qusheng(去聲) through tonal characteristics and the frame work of Non-linear Phonology as spreading and re-linking of L of the voiced onset after devocalization to the following nuclear tone H by stranded tone principle. Other tone changes, such as Pingfenyinyang(平分陰陽), Quanzhuorubianyangping(全濁入變陽平), could be explained in the same way. Comparing with previous analysis based by structure linguistic etc., the Non-linear phonological analysis model suggested here shows the expository adequacy, economical efficiency and grammatical simplicity of the explanation. In final chapter shows the effectiveness and application of research results.
