The circular plan has evolved architecturally through various interpretations according to the times while sharing the essential character of space. The purpose of this study is to identify the essential character of the space in the circular plan applied to the major reading room of the library and to examine the characteristics of the space that is changing into various types. A field survey was conducted on the case of three halls, Stockholm Public Library, Library of Birmingham , and Ishikawa Prefectural Library, in which a major reading room was arranged in a public library and a circular plan was applied, and the spatial characteristics of the circular plan were analyzed from the user's experience. In conclusion, it can be seen that the circular plan of the major reading room is used as a central element symbolized as a metaphor of knowledge, and at the same time maximizes the user's various spatial experience by placing it at the intersection of the lobby, hall, and moving route that welcomes users. In addition, in order to support the vitalization of library use in a modern concept that actively participates in various programs, the circular plan has been gradually changing to welcome encounters with books and serve as a link to various library programs.
