Objective: Recent studies have shown that aggressive surgical intervention has extended the life span of patients with trisomy 18 syndrome. This study summarized patients with trisomy 18 syndrome in a single center neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of nine patients who diagnosed as trisomy 18 syndrome who were born in our hospital or were transferred in NICU. Data of clinical information and results of chromosome test were collected.
Results: Of nine patients we investigated, seven patients were alive and kept following up. Five patients underwent heart surgery, three patients underwent surgical correction of esophageal atresia. Three patients received tracheotomy due to airway problems. Most of patients except one had moderate to severe developmental delay. Three patients were partial trisomy 18, and their clinical features were a little better than those of full trisomy patient.
Conclusion: Surgical intervention for patients with trisomy 18 syndrome can prolong the life of the patient, but does not guarantee the quality of life. Therefore, the family of patients should be involved in determining the treatment direction.
