Objectives: To examine the association between socioeconomic status and mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Methods: We analyzed the data obtained from 3,172 patients with chronic kidney disease from the Korean National Health Insurance claims database. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the mortality rates between the different income groups after adjusting for possible confounding risk factors. Results: A low income was significantly associated with a high mortality rate after adjusting for covariates (HR 1.315[1.096–1.577]). In addition, dialysis patients with low incomes were more likely to have higher mortality risk than those with high incomes (HR 1.561 [1.123–2.170]). Conclusions: Low-income patients with chronic kidney disease have the highest mortality risk. Promoting targeted policies and priority health services for low-income patients may help reduce the mortality rate in this vulnerable group.
