The new age of the Islamic world is accompanied by two fatal trends. One is a confrontation with colonialism and the political, economic, and social changes brought about by colonialism, and the other is a confrontation with the political and cultural modernity of the West against changes in their traditional religions and intellectual debates. This article deals with one of the phenomena related to the internal development of Islam in Islamic countries. In countries with Islamic culture and religion, 4 reactions and 3 trends emerged as a response to Western modernity. 1. It criticizes and denies indigenous cultures while arguing for a transition to values emerging from European modernity. 2. It declared that the values of European modernity also existed in indigenous cultures, but they were ignored. 3. It rejects the values of European modernity and insists on a return to authentic indigenous culture as the only solution. 4. It positively evaluates the value of European modernity and attempts to rebuild religion in a way compatible with European modernity. These four types of reactions or flows relate to both the nature of indigenous religions and the experience of specific historical events. This reaction gave birth to a new trend called religious innovation. Unlike the current of fundamentalism, which regards a return to Islam as the only solution to the problems facing Muslims today, the Religious Innovation considers tradition or fact to be the main cause of the problem. Rethinkers have criticized the interpretations that have dominated Islamic societies for the past millennium and see them as a major obstacle to progress. They made every effort to break the foundation. Islamic religious innovations are still far from stable. Those intellectuals still do not have much support and some have been forced to emigrate. In fact, people in the Middle East still face an identity crisis.
