This paper is organized around three major themes. The first objective is to look at multiple modernities through the lens of cultural and historical geography. Second, in social science research, localised modernity and family studies can empirically confirm the existence of multiple modernities. The third is a landscape-directed human geographical imagination for the study of localised modernity. I will demonstrate how multiple modernities are possible in Anglophone and South Korean cultural and historical geography as a result of this previous literature review. Particular emphasis will be placed on geographical studies of Eurocentric and Westerncentric modernity in Anglophone cultural and historical geography. After that, the chapter will discuss how contemporary historical geographers have cast doubt on Eurocentric and Westerncentric modernity studies and proposed multiple modernities. I will use social anthropology to demonstrate that the existence of multiple modernities, a concept introduced into Anglophone cultural and historical geography’s modernity studies, can be empirically confirmed. By arguing that ‘family or kinship’ should be a critical lens through which to examine the concept of localised modernity, the concept of multiple modernities will be emphasized.
