This paper examines an intertextual analysis of Jamaica Kincaid’s second fictional autobiography Lucy (1990) and Harriet Jacobs’ slave narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861). Discussing the influence of not only English classics but also African American literature, especially American slave narratives presented in Lucy, I argue that Lucy can be considered as an antislavery narrative in which Kincaid presents the traumatic history and vestige of transnational slavery and her cutting remarks on white supremacy and exploitation. On narrating a story of Lucy’s life journey of transition from a girl to a woman who seeks self-liberation and freedom, Kincaid adopts and adapts the legacy inherited from her African ancestors. In her literature of protest against racism, classism, and sexism, Kincaid highlights the sense of alienation, depression, and loneliness shared by colonized, enslaved, and powerless beings. Jacobs’ fugitive status as neither an insider nor an outsider is carried on by Lucy as the power dynamics between the ruler and the ruled remain unchanged. However, as telling a “free story” functioned as the tool for Jacobs to identify and express a self as well as to expose the evils of slavery, by writing her name and filling a blank page, Lucy declares the birth of Lucy-the master.
