In this article, I confirm that not only ‘culture’ and ‘study’ but also ‘play’ are essential elements of reading. First, I analyse Tamenaga Shunsui’s Gyokuto with special reference to children’s play described therein. Second, I confirm that reading forms part of children’s play. According to Roger Caillois and Johan Huizinga’s theory of play, reading is categorised as the type of play characterised in terms of ‘mimicry’ (meaning ‘imitation’ and ‘simulation’) and ‘agon’ (meaning ‘competition’). In Gyokuto and other ninjōbon works by Tamenaga Shunsui, reading is identified as play in the above sense. That is, the readers use books as a tool for play comparable to sugoroku (Japanese board game). The reason why the Japanese modern literature, which built on American and European modern philosophies, was called ‘pure’ literature is that the popular literature pre-existed as a tool for play, developed as mass media. It has been a while since the popular literature, which is consumed in the form of play, took the place of the pure literature. The characteristics of ninjōbon works, which were created for reading as a leisure act, offer a valuable reference point for the study of the contemporary popular literature.
