After the death of Gaddafi in 2011, the Libyan civil war witnessed the involvement of various countries supporting different governments. On one side, there are countries such as Turkey, Qatar, and Italy, which support the Government of National Accord (GNA). On the other side, countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Russia, and France support the Libyan National Army(LNA). These countries not only seek to expand their influence in the oil supply and Mediterranean region but also engage in proxy warfare by supporting their respective governments in the Libyan conflict. This phenomenon highlights how external actors prioritize their own national interests and exacerbate conflicts, making cease-fire negotiations more challenging than achieving a resolution to the civil war.
This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to the occurrence and protraction of various civil wars, focusing on the case of Libya to examine how foreign countries’ engagement protracted civil war.
