PURPOSE: Pilates exercise effects on bone metabolism are still unknown. This study aims to elucidate the effect of 12 weeks springboard pilates on bone mineral density (BMD), muscle mass and functional movement of female college students. METHODS: Twenty-four female college students (aged 21.6±1.3yrs, T-score -0.01±0.62) were divided into two groups, as the pilates springboard group (PSG, n=12) and non-exercise control group (CG, n=12). The pilates springboard exercise was conducted 3 times a week for 60 minutes for 12 weeks with 3 steps of gradual exercise intensity of 9-16 respiratory exchange ratio (RPE). Total body BMD and muscle mass were analyzed by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA HologicInc, USA) and functional movement were analyzed by functional movement screen (FMS, USA). RESULTS: There was no significant interaction effects in the total body BMD and BMC (NS), and also no significant interaction effects in the muscle mass of the total body, arms, and legs (NS) between both groups. There were significant interaction effects in the functional movement items, The hurdle step and trunk stability measured by FMS in PSG were significantly increased after 12 weeks exercise (p<.05), but those of CG were not changed. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that although prolonged springboard pilates of healthy college women might be improving functional movement, there is no increasing effect of BMD and muscle mass.
