This study examines the semantics of loanwords between Korean and Japanese, focusing on those that have the same original words. The subject of the study is loanwords that are registered in the dictionary both countries, and selected in the loanword refined policy. The basic method involved a review of the dictionary meanings of loanwords to determine whether they had the same meaning in Korean and Japanese. Next, the refined words were examined to establish whether they had the same meaning in Korean and Japanese. For loanwords, the result shows that nine words had the same meanings, 13 words partially had the same meanings, six words had different meanings. As for refined words, the result shows that nine words had the same meanings, 14 words partially had the same meanings, five words had different meanings. However, a combination of the two results showed that three words had a same meanings, and almost words partially had the same meanings, while one word had different meanings. This result of the present study are limited to the meanings of dictionary and refined words. Therefore subsequent studies should compare and analyze the this result and meaning of loanwords used in newspapers and clarify the meaning of loanwords between Korean and Japanese.
