The Jugurthine war (112-105) was one of the more impressive wars that the Roman Republic waged against foreign kingdoms in the late Republican era. Bellum Iugurthinum by the author Sallustius preserves the most detailed contents on the war among the remaining ancient sources. However, it focuses particularly on his political views in interpreting that war. Here Sallustius criticizes the participant Roman commanders and their enemy Jugurtha.
The studies on that war sofar have already criticized the general opinion of Sallustius. But the Roman scholars have not delved deeply enough into the war itself. They should have considered the things that Sallustius has ignored or not realized in order to provide a more neutral understanding of that war.
This study will analyze two points in order to answer the question. Firstly, it is necessary to review the abilities of the Roman enemy, Jugurtha, himself. One more factor is the geographical actualities of Numidia where the Romans had to fight against Jugurtha. A deep study of both things can give us an explanation as to why Bellum Iugurthinum dragged out to such a degree. This will provide a useful historical study on matters that were not treated by Sallustius, and we will gain a more objective understanding of the war.
