The purpose of this study is to classify the discourse response function of the response marker ‘可不是(kebushi)’ and to examine the lexicalization process and mechanism until it is used as a response marker. In this study, analysis was conducted using dramas to examine both the preceding and following utterances of the response.
This study examined the discourse function of ‘可不是(kebushi)’ by dividing it into positive and negative responses. A positive response has the functions of consent, confirmation, and feedback, and a negative response has the function of courtesy. First, ‘consent’ is the most important function of the response marker ‘可不是(kebushi)’. In the preceding utterance, the speaker’s subjective opinion is presented, and the respondent expresses complete agreement for the speaker’s opinion with ‘可不是(kebushi)’. Second, the preceding utterance can ask the other person a question as a modal of question or counter-question, and ask for ‘confirmation’ as to whether or not it is true. At this time, ‘可不是(kebushi)’ is the response to give the confirmation of the fact. Third, listeners can chime in with the preceding utterance and respond to the information conveyed by the speaker by using ‘可不是(kebushi)’ as ‘feedback’. The feedback of the listener at this time is a signal that he/she has accepted and understood the objective fact conveyed by the speaker.
Lexicalization is when two or more words are combined to be likely to form like a single vocabulary. This study examined the process of diachronic change until ‘可(ke)’ and ‘不是(bushi)’ merged into one and became a response marker. The form of ‘可(ke)+不是(bushi)’ the very first appeared in interrogative sentences in the Tang Dynasty(唐代). In the Yuan Dynasty(元代), the use of ‘可不是(kebushi)’ in rhetorical questions increased greatly. A rhetorical question expresses a positive meaning in the form of a negative. A counter-question modal, ‘可不是 (kebushi); how can it not be ···?’ has the implication of ‘of course it is ···’. In the Qing Dynasty(淸代), ‘可不是(kebushi)’ began to be used alone as a response marker for consent. Next, this study also examined the syntactic reanalysis of ‘可不是(kebushi)’. Reanalysis refers to structural changes that do not change the form of the surface layer. Reanalysis is a condition in which the response marker ‘可不是(kebushi)’ can be lexicalized. ‘可不是(kebushi)’ has a four-step reanalysis process such as (1) 可(ke)+[[不是(bushi)]+X] → (2) [[可不是(kebushi)]+X] → (3) [可不是(kebushi)] → (4) [可不(是)kebu(shi)].
This study considered the mechanisms for the formation of the response marker ‘可不是(kebushi)’ as ‘pragmatic inference’ and ‘contextinduced absorption’. Above all, from the counter-question modal, ‘可不是(kebushi)’, ‘how can it not be ···?’ is inferred the implication of affirmation, ‘of course it is ···’. The subjective feeling of affirmation about an event is very naturally inferred once again as the implicative meaning of ‘consent’. In addition, ‘可不是(kebushi)’ absorbs the context of the rhetorical question and connects with a positive meaning.
It is hoped that the analysis of this study will be helpful in understanding the discourse function and lexicalization process of the response marker ‘可不是(kebushi)’.
