Most people perceive electronic music as merely a collection of sounds and question the purpose of this kind of music. The answer naturally leads to questioning the dichotomy of tone/noise. The general belief is that there is no rigid standard distinguishing tone and noise. Noise is said to be a product of cultural lag, owing to its avant-garde character. Therefore, by accepting noise as music, the horizon of music is extended. I consider this narrative a kind of avant-garde narrative. If we could apply this kind of avant-garde narrative to electronic music, we could make the following two inferences. The first inference is that the range of musical material is extended from tone to sound, which includes noise. The second is that extremely noisy sound changes the musical standard. However, both narratives reveal the limit that the characteristic of electronic music cannot be changed; it can only extend to the general character of avant-garde music. On the other hand, Xenakis"s experiment shows the revolutionary form that integrates the micro and macro levels in musical composition, thanks to his own musical principles, such as “non-standard”synthesis and stochastic composition. Additionally, the concept of “event”is very useful to understand this new musical form. Noise in Xenakis"s music is not an object to be evaluated aesthetically, but an expression to represent his musical experiment and the musical possibility of electronic music in general.
