Purposes: This study aimed to evaluate nursing students’ health literacy level and understanding of medical words, and to examine difference of the understanding among the students’ grades. Methods: Secondary data analysis was conducted for 160 nursing students. Korean Health Literacy Assessment Tool (KHLAT) was used to assess health literacy and understanding of medical words. Descriptive statistics and analysis of variance were performed to analyze data. Results: Health literacy level assessed by the KHLAT were 50.71 in freshmen, 56.41 in sophomores, and 58.82 in seniors on average (possible range from 0 to 66), which was significantly different among the grades. The items of the lowest understanding were impetigo, smear, herpes, gonorrhea, nerves, flu, and syphilis, answered by less than 70% of the subjects as "knows the accurate meaning.” Conclusion: In nursing education curriculum, more emphasis needs to be placed on acquisition of knowledge on specific diseases and pathophysiology, which may be used in health education for patients with low health literacy.
