This paper tries to study handwriting characteristics in expressionism, dadaism, surre떠ism, informel, and abstract expressionism as it is judged that part of the characteristics of ‘pictures and writings(續書畵)’ shown in modern Korean paintings, that is, ‘handwriting as paintings' and ‘paintings as handwriting' is shown in the trends of modern westem art. It is thought that integration of East and West got to be possible as Europe and US accepted oriental zen(輝) thought and exotic hobbies veη much in the early 20th century until the characteristics were revealed. For example, the partial Western modernism trend which claimed to support appeared as a new way in the 19th century as various principles and opinions. And today, the aspects have rapidly changed. Above all, the general characteristics of pattern changes of modern art places atypical modern art for security. That is, like formative awareness of ‘unconscious impulse’ and ‘contingency’ examined as it is inherent in aesthetic communion between East and West and their handwriting abstraction, the art trends of abstract expressionism and informel appeared in the 20th century have a good understanding with the point that they enjoyed free use of writing brushes by accepting the properties of ‘dashing off with one stroke of a brush' being closed to oriental abstract ink-and-wash paintings or calligraphy.
