The French ? the people who left a huge mark on Western Hangeul research in the 1800s ? began to break their long silence and mentioned Hangeul once again only after the 1980s. Fundamentally, the Hangeul research of France in the 1800s began under the Western world’s expansional view to know of the mysterious country Chosun that existed between China and Japan in the 19th century. Therefore, the relatively active Hangeul research of the French that began in the early and lasted until the late 19th century was almost completely lost after diplomatic relationships between Korea and France that were forged in 1886 were severed in 1905. After the Korea-Japan Annexation in 1910, all motivation for research was almost completely lost. Even after Korea’s liberation, interest in Hangeul was not resurrected in France. Practically, throughout the entire 20th century after the Korea-Japan Annexation, there are no cases of French research on Hangeul until the 1980s, save for Japanese scholar expert Haguenauer’s few papers and Cohen’s fragmented mentioning. In short, the French research on Hangeul that was presented in Korea has its tracks stopped in the early 20th century. This paper analyzes the ‘contemporary’ French understanding of Hangeul focused on the three chief articles regarding Hangeul that were published by the French in the 1980s to 2000. The three articles are “Korea’s Letters” included in James Fevrier’s History of Letters published in 1945, went through a complete revision in 1959 and was published again in a revised edition in 1984, “Korea’s Letters” included in Jean-Louis Calvet’s History of Letters published in 1996, and “Korea’s Alphabet” included in Anne-Marie Christin’s publication History of Letters, written by Daniel Bouchez. These three works were chosen because they are the only works of the 1980s to the present in which the French mention Han’gul. These works show that in Western world, scholars are unable to remove their skepticism towards King Sejong as the creator of Korean and the Chinje theory. What is significant is that the Western academic world has been denying the originality of Hangeul, attempting to link it to theories such as the Paspa Letter Origin theory and the Tibet Letter Origin theory. It could be shown that the Western academic world has erroneously been continuing to find a relationship that influenced the creation of Hangeul and continues to do so even in the present 21st century. After the Korean War, unlike the British and American assessments, the French academic world does not have a time of praise for the excellence of Hangeul. Even after the discovery of the original Explanation of the Hunminjeongum in 1940, which clearly showed the principles of the creation of Hangeul, the French refused to accept the latest accomplishments of Korean academics immediately.
