This is an analysis of the female sexuality and depression related to the heroines’ suicide in The Blithedale Romance and The Awakening. Apparently, Zenobia’s and Edna’s suicide result from their disappointment in love for they drowned themselves after they realized the fact that their lovers had left and no one could understand them. However, when Zenobia and Edna drowned themselves, their depression as well as their broken hearts, caused the fatal decisions. They had experienced isolation since their early childhood and their depressive symptoms critically developed as they agonized over interpersonal conflict due to female sexuality. Examination of these female protagonists’ sexuality and depression will enhance the understanding of individuals’ struggles against social norms and the tragic solutions for defining and confining world.
