The goal of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the regional income disparity in Xinjiang by focusing on the role of between-group inequality in explaining overall regional income disparity during the period of 1978-2012. Between-group inequality reflects the geographic location of the Han and ethnic minorities, predominantly Uyghur: Han make up the majority of the north, oil-producing regions, and urban areas, while ethnic minorities are predominantly found in the south, non-oil-producing regions, and rural areas. We show that the share of regional income disparity attributable to between-group inequality in Xinjiang is higher than the average contribution of between-group inequality to the overall regional disparity found in other empirical studies. We also demonstrate that the contribution and polarization of between-group inequality are much higher in terms of the oil and non-oil divide than both the north-south and the urban-rural divides. Finally, the contribution and polarization of the oil and non-oil inequality has declined since the mid-2000s, while it has risen for both the north-south and the urban-rural inequalities
