This study first examines factors contributing inequality within social groups in rural India. Literature analyzing inequality in India has focused mainly on inequality between other caste and the disadvantaged non-other caste such as ‘scheduled castes’, scheduled tribes’ and other backward castes’. However, decomposing inequality into between and within inequality by social group, we find that the contribution of inequality within social groups into total inequality dominated in 1999 and 2006. Furthermore, our findings from regression based within inequality decomposition for inequality within each of social groups confirms that the size of factor contribution into within inequality were highly different across social groups and changed over time, suggesting that not only economic disparity between social groups, but also government needs to pay more careful attention and attempt to address inequality within social groups for effective inequality reduction strategies.
