The illness in literature brings up a subject as the perspective of an illness narrative as a symbol and metaphor of pain emerged in the history of mankinds. This paper studied how illness works as a modern motif by focusing the illness narrative expressed in literature coupled with cosmic meaning of disease. Ding Ling's Diary of Miss Shafei was selected to investigate this inference as a reference with metaphor of illness. The main female character, named Shafei, is suffered from the tuberculosis which is emerging infectious diseases in China. The suffering of the tuberculosis in this novel as illness motif and symbolic practice shapes the new characteristics of women including sexual appetite and repression against a society of that period. novel’s main character Shafei set to a woman suffering from tuberculosis. This paper captured that the characteristics of Shafei is detailed as illness motif and symbolic practice. In addition, Ding Ling but did not mention the hysteria symptoms just mentioned only tuberculosis, focused on there is a relationship between tuberculosis and hysteria.
