In Korea, a new policy to restrict working hours to 52 hours per week at maximum was passed by the National Assembly in 2018 and started to be applied only for employees in large firms from April 2019. In this study, we examine changes in working hours and life satisfaction of long-time workers after the 52-hour workweek policy. Using the survey data of Korean employees from the Korean Labor & Income Panel Study(KLIPS), we find that working hours of long-time workers significantly decreased after the policy implementation, regardless of whether employees are applied to the policy. However, we do not find improvement in life satisfaction of long-time workers even with reduction in working hours. This study contributes to the literature on working hour reduction of long-time workers and has implications on policy makers in that future policies should consider a way that can improve workers’ life satisfaction.
