Sermons delivered through preachers point the audience to Jesus Christ when the sermons are based on the authority of Scripture and God who is the Creator of all living creatures. Therefore, the preachers, who deliver the life-saving word of God, should follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Then, they should prepare their sermons not based on their world view but on what the Bible teaches. As one of the approaches of life-saving sermons, this dissertation seeks to demonstrate how the preachers can deliver effectively the meaning of Old Testament narratives. For this, the dissertation will focus on character and characterization and investigate how the authors of OT narratives use them in delivering the meaning of the text. The authors utilize various literary and rhetorical devices for characterization. This dissertation will demonstrate the ways of how characters are depicted in the narratives then will analyze how the ways are applied to 1 Samuel 9. The preachers, who deliver the life-saving word of God, should understand correctly God’s love and plan for His people revealed in Scripture. Concerning this, this dissertation will suggest that the preachers need to be equipped with the ways of characterization for the correct understanding of the meaning of the narrative texts.
