[Purpose]Developing an effective teacher evaluation system is a means of improving teacher performance and, ultimately, student achievement. To this end, this research examines 11 consequence components of teacher evaluation systems in the United States to determine their influence on student achievement. Moreover, based on analysis results, this study aims to provide insights and implications for improving South Korea’s teacher evaluation system. [Methods]Using NCTQ(National Council on Teacher Quality) data on evaluation components and data from national achievement tests (SAT, ACT, and NAEP) for all 50 states, this study performed multiple regression analyses to explore the causal relationships. [Results]The analysis revealed that some components had a significant positive impact on student achievement (e.g., tenure decisions on SAT scores; reporting teacher effectiveness on ACT scores), while some components had a significant negative impact (e.g., merit pay on ACT scores; merit pay on NAEP scores). [Conclusion]This pioneer study provides valuable insights and implications for Korea in that it describes how an effective evaluation system can ensure high-quality teaching and equitable distribution of high-quality teachers, both of which can result in improved student achievement.
