This study investigated the structure and properties of chitosan-PVA hybrid mask sheets prepared with 2% chitosan and 10% PVA. Using FT-IR, their intermolecular interactions in the mixture showed a ratio of 60% and 40%, respectively. To obtain a microporous structure, sodium bicarbonate and glutalaldehyde were applied to the mixture to give cross-linked chitosan-PVA hybrid mask sheets. Glutaraldehyde was used to adjust the strength of the hybrid mask sheets. Hunter L*, a*, and b* values were used for comparison of color differences between the chitosan-PVA hybrid mask sheet and the cross-linked chitosan-PVA mask sheet. A decrease in L* and increase in b* were observed with the increase in the ratio of chitosan to PVA. ΔE values were also increased by chitosan in a concentration dependent manner. This means that the glutaraldehyde is expected to form the Schiff base upon nucleophilic reaction by the primary amine groups of the chitosan. The morphology of the cross-linked structure showed evenly well distributed micropores with an average size of 10 μm. This unique structure resulted in a large surface area that could hold a large amount of water. Lysozyme as a mucolytic enzyme dissolved the cross-linked chitosan-PVA hybrid mask sheet by hydrolyzing the glycosidic linkage of the chitosan backbone. These highly swellable and enzyme responsible hybrid mask sheets can enable the potential transfer of cosmetic active compounds.
