This research article is a part of the Doctor of Philosophy program in Multicultural Education, Faculty of Education, Chiang Mai University. The paper presents a critical analysis of the factors contributing to the inheritance and conservation guidelines of Khap Thum Luang Prabang song of Lao diaspora in Ban Huay Luek village, Wiang Kaen district, Chiang Rai province, Thailand. All information from document analysis on folk songs, interviews with local residents who are involved in singing the song, and the recorded performance were analyzed to reveal themes of the song, ways of music transmission, and characteristics of the song that are unique to the Lao diaspora in Thailand. The study also uncovers factors affecting the inheritance of Laos culture. Although these people have yearlong migrated to Thailand, the song illustrates the culture of Laos Luang Prabang and the Lao diaspora. The song reflects the origin and recalls the memory of their homeland presenting the history and identity of Lao Luang Prabang ethnic. The study found that performing Khap Thum Luang Prabang singing in general merit occasions is a guideline to conserve and sustain the Lao culture and identity. The song has been used to express the unique culture and tradition of the Lao ethnic group through their spoken language. Also the costumes represent their characters. Thus, Khap Thum Luang Prabang song is a representative of the brotherhood relationship between the Lao diaspora in Thailand and the Laos people in the country of origin.
