The purpose of this study was to investigate middle school students’ responses characteristics revealed in solving the problem related to blood circulation. We analyzed the students’ responses types and characteristics by using the students’ answers in NAEA(National Assessment of Educational Achievement). According to the results of this study, the correct answer rate for the test item was 31.7%, which is lower than the average of the correct answer rate in descriptive assessment items. And the students’ responses types and characteristics were categorized by 7 types, in which the correct answer types and the incorrect answer types. The correct answer types contained ‘fully understanding’ and ‘partially understanding’, and the incorrect answer types contained the content-specific incorrect answer types such as ‘misunderstanding concept’ and ‘making incorrect assumption’, and the content-general incorrect answer types such as ‘misreading’, ‘disregarding evidence’ and ‘restate data’. According to the achievement level groups, prominent students’ responses types were different: the type of ‘fully understanding’ in Level 4 group, the types of ‘fully understanding’, ‘partially understanding’, ‘misunderstanding concept’ and ‘misreading’ in Level 3 group, the types of ‘misunderstanding concept’, ‘disregarding evidence’, and ‘restate data’ in Level 2 group. As non-responses were predominant in Level 1 group, only some of answers in Level 1 group were identified. Based on these results, we suggested implications for teaching and learning on blood circulation.
